Unsolicited Phishing Mails – Please be warned

Once every so often you will receive phishing emails. To avoid becoming a victim of phishing emails, we ask you to read the following information carefully.

Recognizing fraudulent e-mails

Our customers are regularly being targeted by ‘phishing’ attacks from criminals, pretending to be us. They will try to engage you in conversation, impersonating ZEROhomebills.com or its Partner` employees. Most often the goal is to get you to transfer money to them, for example by convincing you that we have changed bank accounts.

How to recognize phishing e-mails?

Are you being pressured?

It’s a red flag when a sender pressures you to take action, like stating your account will be closed if you don’t respond.

Are you being asked to change bank account numbers or pay invoices to an enclosed bank account number?

It’s very unlikely we’ll change bank account numbers, nor do we include the account number to use in e-mail messages. If you receive an e-mail with a bank account number enclosed, when in doubt, always double-check by phone. Find a phone number on www.zerohomebills.com, or call someone you know whose voice you can recognize. Do not call a phone number provided in the e-mail message in question, as that will be forged as well.

Is the email from @zerohomebills.com?

Always carefully check the sender address of emails. Often, they try and use a domain name similar  to ours. But, unfortunately, they can also send emails that look like they came from the real @zerohomebills.com domain.

There are two things to do against that:

  • One is to always check where your reply is going after clicking the reply button. If its a “2134234ddfe@gmail.com” type of email, you know enough: it’s a phishing email.
  • The second method is by your email provider or IT system to implement DKIM and DMARC
Technical countermeasures: DKIM and DMARC

It’s relatively easy for criminals to forge the sender e-mail address, like @zerohomebills.com, or one of our other domain names. There is a solution, but that only works if both the sending company (ZEROhomebills.com) and the receiving company (you) have implemented them. This technology allows your system to check the authenticity of e-mails sent from @zerohomebills.com, using digital signatures. All e-mail transmitted by ZEROhomebills.com and the 0Bills DIY Solar and Wind Store are signed with “DKIM” and we have a “DMARC” policy to enforce that the aforementioned signature has to be present.

E-mail systems on the receiving end can be configured to reject incoming e-mail that don’t comply. With large e-mail providers such as Microsoft and Google, this works by default, meaning fraudulent e-mails claiming to be sent from @zerohomebills.com will be rejected or marked as spam.

Ask your IT department to look into enabling DKIM and DMARC verification.

Always remain vigilant! Thank you for taking precautions on your end.

Please note that neither ZEROhomebills.com nor its Partner is responsible for any damages caused by such received mails.
