The LG Chem RESU 16H Prime Lithium Ion 16kWh Solar Battery Storage is part of the announced third-generation Gen3 battery system.  The RESU 16H Prime energy storage system is due to be released at end of 2020.; and it is available for backorder since Q1 2021 in our DIY store.  Over the last two years demand has grown rapidly for larger, more powerful battery systems which can compliment the movement towards all-electric-homes and electric vehicle charging. One area where the older range of LG batteries were limited was the maximum power output which was fixed at 5kW continuous and 7kW peak (RESU10), even with two batteries combined.

The Gen3 RESU Prime battery from LG Chem addressed these limitations with a much greater 16kWh storage capacity and higher continuous power rating of 7kW. However, the most significant boost is in regards to peak power which has increased to an impressive 11kW. The larger peak power rating means the backup loads on a typical household can now include high-surge power appliances like pumps and air-conditioners (so long as the inverter can also deliver the power required during an outage!)

The NEW RESU 16H Prime

The new LG RESU Prime lineup offers large-capacity, high-powered batteries courtesy of industry-leading energy density, while allowing much-needed sustainable energy use through its proactive efforts toward fair cobalt procurement. Having passed all safety tests conducted in the harshest conditions, the new range has been proven to enhance safety while also adding more flexibility when it comes to installation, handling and scale-up.


Although the 159kg is significant it is still a compact and lightweight energy storage system; therefore the nature of the RESU Prime is world-class. It is designed only for floor-standing installations. The inverter connections have also been simplified, reducing installation time and costs. LG Chem RESU batteries are IP55 weather-rated. This means they can be installed in a semi-outdoor location such as a veranda or carport, but should not be located in a position exposed to direct sunlight, especially during the warmer months. As with any electrical/battery system, excessive prolonged heat is detrimental to the performance and life of the system.


The new LG Chem RESU 16H Prime Lithium Ion 16kWh Solar Battery Storage (400V) features industry-leading continuous power and DC round-trip efficiency (100%). LG Chem’s L&S (Lamination & Stacking) technology provides durability ensuring 80% of capacity retention after 10 years.


LG Chem places the highest priority on safety and utilizes the same technology for its ESS products that has been proven safety record in its automotive battery. All products are fully certified in relevant global standards.


Using a RESU Plus (expansion kit) up to 2 RESU Prime batteries can be cross-connected to increase the usable capacity.

You can connect two LG Chem RESU solar batteries together to form a single large battery system by connecting the them together with a LG Chem RESU Parralel Connection Box supplied by LG Chem using the link ports on the battery.

The RESU 10H comes in two typesType R and Type C. Both types depend on the paired inverter: Type R—Designed to be paired with the SolarEdge StorEdge + Storage Inverter, Huawei and Fronius Hybrid Inverters. Type C—Designed to be paired with the SMA SunnyBoy Storage Residential Energy Storage Inverter series.

One of the reasons is that majority of the compatible battery inverter range has no grid forming capabilities (except Fronius GEN24); on the other hand the BMU of the battery cannot handle the peak power needs frequently needed in an off-grid use. Can be done? Yes, if the system is carefully sized.
