Established in 2006 by the current management team, SOLFEX energy systems is one of the original & largest specialist distributors in the UK of high quality renewable energy systems, specifically focusing on solar thermal and photovoltaic power products, Air Source Heat Pumps & Underfloor heating systems.

The company origins are founded on supplying the solar thermal sector with its exclusive ‘own branded’ solar thermal equipment supplied by Europe’s leading manufacturers.

In 2009, the company broadened its renewables offering with the setup of a sales division focussed on the supply of photovoltaic equipment.  The decision to set up a new photovoltaic division prior to the introduction of the Feed in Tariff (“FIT”) in 2010 proved to be a wise move; in 2010 SOLFEX energy systems relocated to a new larger distribution facility to accommodate increased stock holding and the considerable sales growth being achieved.

In January 2013, SOLFEX Energy systems was acquired by the Travis Perkins Group, one of the UK’s leading companies in the builders’ merchant and home improvement markets. They operate 16 businesses from more than 1,800 sites across the UK and Ireland. Buy the best solar thermal kits and packages for domestic hot water production from NASDAQ, Bloomberg and Fortune 500 listed manufacturers at best price; suitable for all weather conditions.

A solar thermal collector collects heat by absorbing sunlight. The term “solar collector” commonly refers to a device for solar hot water heating, but may refer to large power generating installations such as solar parabolic troughs and solar towers or non water heating devices such as solar air heaters

People use solar thermal energy for many purposes, including heating water, air, and the interior of buildings and generating electricity. There are two general types of solar heating systems: passive systems and active systems.
30 years
There is little or no maintenance required with solar heating systems and the expected lifespan is over 30 years. Solfex guarantees the collectors for 20 years.
As a rule of thumb you need between 1 and 2 m2 of collector (solar panels) per person living in the house. Shade on the panels at any time of day will reduce the performance. Most panels are mounted on a roof, but they can also be mounted at ground level.

Non-concentrating collectors

The collector area (the area that intercepts solar radiation) is the same as the absorber area (the area absorbing the solar energy/radiation). Solar energy systems for heating water or air usually have non-concentrating collectors. Flat-plate collectors are the most common type of non-concentrating collectors for water and space heating in buildings and are used when temperatures lower than 93C (200°F) are sufficient.

Flat-plate solar collectors usually have three main components:

  • A flat metal plate that intercepts and absorbs solar energy
  • A transparent cover that allows solar energy to pass through the cover and reduces heat loss from the absorber
  • A layer of insulation on the back of the absorber to reduce heat loss

Solar water heating collectors have metal tubes attached to the absorber. A heat-transfer fluid is pumped through the absorber tubes to remove heat from the absorber and transfer the heat to water in a storage tank. Solar systems for heating swimming pool water in warm climates usually do not have covers or insulation for the absorber, and pool water is circulated from the pool through the collectors and back to the pool.

Solar air heating systems use fans to move air through flat-plate collectors and into the interior of buildings.

Concentrating collectors

The area intercepting solar radiation is greater, sometimes hundreds of times greater, than the absorber area. The collector focuses, or concentrates, solar energy onto an absorber. The collector usually moves throughout the day so that it maintains a high degree of concentration on the absorber. Solar thermal power plants use concentrating solar collector systems because they can produce the high temperature heat needed to generate electricity.
