Solar PV Breaks Out In The UK Despite COVID-19
MCS has this week updated its Solar-PV standard as it celebrates a 5% rise in installations over the July & August period. These figures become even more impressive when coupled with the context of COVID-19 & the closure of the feed-in tariff (FiT), which could have caused a significant downturn. Despite these testing conditions, solar installations have grown, demonstrating the staying power of the technology.
MCS says solar PV installations are up
This has come as a welcome result, with MCS CEO Ian Rippin saying that the figures are “really positive”. In fact, when looking at the rebounding domestic market in greater detail, we found that installations in June were up 185% on May 2020 figures. This kind of breakout is exactly the kind of boom that the market needed to recover from an abrupt lockdown.
The MCS has also adopted the IET Code of Practice for solar PV systems and withdraws the MCS PV Guide.
The Chair of the MCS Group stated that this “keeps the scheme at the forefront of standards, by referencing the current best practice”. He went on to say, “This update will make the standard a relevant reference for the industry – where Solar-PV will continue to play a pivotal role in the low carbon economy.”

Microgeneration Certification Scheme ( MCS )
From its inception in 2007 as a government scheme to a to an increasingly publicly recognised brand MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) continues to be a mark of quality that reassures consumers that products, installers and their installations are of the highest standard.
Published this week, the new robust Solar PV Standard (MIS3002) provides a helpful toolkit for contractors in a post-FiT world, ensuring consumer protection and driving best practice. The update outlines the installation requirements for MCS certified contractors who supply, design, and install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. It also adopts the IET Code of Practice for solar photovoltaic systems and withdraws the MCS PV Guide.
Chair of the MCS Solar PV Working Group, KT Tan commented: “The launch of the update to MIS3002 and MGD005 keeps the scheme at the forefront of standards, by referencing the current best practice. The update considers the pertinent safety recommendations from PV fire research, incorporated the pioneering MCS energy storage scheme, and been extended to flat roof installations.”
He added “We would like to thank the great input from the members of the industry led Working Group and the valuable feedback from public consultation. This update will make the standard a relevant reference for the industry – where Solar PV will continue to play a pivotal role in the low carbon economy.”
