Solar PV Set to Spearhead UK Energy Generation
BEIS say solar PV is the most cost-effective method for generating electricity. The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has outlined a new study this week focusing on energy analysis for the UK over the coming years. The Government’s research clearly indicated that solar-PV was the most cost-effective method for generating electricity available to the country, which came as welcome news to all within the industry.
Solar PV projects commissioning in 2025 are expected to cost half that of combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT), which is expected to lower further still until 2040, where costs could be as low as £28/MWh.
STA Chief Executive Chris Hewett said: “The industry has known for a long time that large-scale solar is one of the cheapest power technologies available today, and we are pleased that this has now been officially recognised.”
“Now it is time for the Government to set an ambitious target for the deployment of solar PV in the UK, as it has done with offshore wind. Our favoured goal, 40GW by 2030, aligns with recommendations made by the Committee on Climate Change and the National Infrastructure Commission, and is achievable with moderate policy support.”
Whilst it remains unclear as to whether the Government will deliver on the STA’s ambitious targets, what is clear is that solar-PV is the most viable solution for future Governments and could be poised to take the lead on driving our energy.
